Singer/songwriters Sav Walts (Savs) and Nicholas Hamilton harness the power of common experience and heartbreak in their upcoming single noRoom. The pair began working on the song while staying at an Airbnb songwriting retreat in LA over the summer, bonding over their shared love for music from artists like Yebba despite coming from wildly different backgrounds: Sav is a former Nazarene worship leader-turned-folk-singer, while Nic – originally from Australia – has built a sturdy career as an actor and more recently discovered his love for making music.

Though the two had previously written songs together, Nic explains the song’s creation as being a uniquely organic process: “[It’s] a diary entry that we could have just written in our notes, but we just happened to be talking to each other about it instead and realizing that [our situations were very] similar to each other… it didn't start as a writing session; we were at that Airbnb as a songwriting retreat that we created, and we were literally just venting to each other about what happened.” Sav chimes, in, saying, “once you find that one thing that really ties you guys together, something really special can come out of it.”

That “one thing” was the shared experience of having to give up on a relationship with someone who “wanted to have enough room in their hearts, but they just didn’t. And that was the most frustrating part… letting go even when they didn’t want to let go,” Sav tells me, “it was tough too because it's not like they did something terrible to make us hate them, you know, which is kind of what you want in a breakup; you want to just be pissed and talk shit about them, but [in this situation] you couldn’t because they're both wonderful, they were just going through stuff that like made it so that [they had] no room.”

Wanting to avoid wallowing in post-breakup sadness, the duo sought to make the song as dance-able as it is reflective and remorseful. As Nic explains: “I think you can only get so far with a song that is purely sad and a proper ballad that you want to cry to in your room… and the exact opposite, like the radio hits that are about partying with your friends. I think there's something to be said when you do both and can mix them and balance them correctly.”

Combining Nic’s pop-oriented vocal style Sav’s folk-y timbre, noRoom is a longing reflection upon a failed relationship tucked within the exterior of a glimmery pop ballad. The track will be available on all music streaming platforms on 2/12. You can pre-save the song here.
